Frequently Asked Questions
General FAQs
Q: How long are sessions?
A: Individual sessions are typically 60 minutes. This gives us enough time to settle in, do meaningful work, and close with grounding. Some people find that 75 or 90 minute sessions work better for them. Family Sessions are 90 minutes.
Q: Do you offer in-person or online sessions?
A: Both. I see clients in person at my office and also offer secure telehealth sessions. You can choose what works best for you, or mix the two depending on your needs.
Q: How often do we meet?
A: We begin with weekly sessions to build trust and momentum. Over time, sessions may move to every other week or less frequently depending on your progress and goals.
Q: How long will therapy take?
A: It varies. Some people come for a few months to focus on a specific issue, while others continue longer for deeper exploration and support. We’ll check in regularly about your goals and adjust as needed.
Q: Do you accept insurance?
A: I do not bill insurance directly. However, I can provide you with a “super bill” invoice that you may submit to your insurance company for consideration. Most clients find they are reimbursed for their sessions with me as an out-of-network mental health care provider. I am happy to provide you with additional information so you can contact your insurance company to verify your coverage.
Q: What are your fees?
A: My fee is $180 for 60 minutes, $225 for 75 minutes, and $270 for 90 minutes. I accept online payment (credit card and FSA/HSA) and provide a superbill for out-of-network reimbursement if requested.
Q: What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
A: Life happens! I ask for at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice may be subject to a fee.
Q: Do you work with adults who aren’t parents?
A: Yes. While I specialize in working with youth and families, I also work with adults one-on-one. Individual therapy is a space to explore your own inner world, heal unhelpful patterns, and move toward greater clarity and connection.
Q: How do I get started?
A: The first step is a free 15-minute consultation. This is a chance for us to connect, for you to ask questions, and to see if this feels like a good fit. If it does, we’ll schedule your first session and begin the process together.
FAQs for
Teens &
Young Adults
Q: What happens in therapy?
A: We create a safe space together. We talk. We figure out what works for you. Sometimes we explore what feels heavy or confusing; sometimes we focus on what’s going well. Therapy isn’t about me telling you what to do—it’s about us figuring things out together, at your pace. I also have baskets and baskets of fidgets, art supplies and other fun stuff.
Q: Will therapy be boring?
A: I don’t think so! I bring humor and creativity into sessions, and we’ll find what works for you. Sometimes we’ll laugh, sometimes things might feel hard, but either way it’s real and it’s yours.
Q: Do I have to talk about everything?
A: Nope. You decide what feels safe to share. My job is to respect your boundaries and create a space where you might feel comfortable opening up, but you are always in control.
Q: What if I don’t want my parents to know everything I say?
A: What you share in therapy is private. I won’t tell your parents the details of our conversations unless you want me to. The only exceptions are if I think you’re at risk of being seriously hurt, hurting someone else or ending your life by suicide.
Q: What if I don’t know what to say?
A: That’s okay. Lots of people feel that way at first. We can start slow. Sometimes we’ll just talk, sometimes we might use drawing, writing, or other creative ways to help express what’s going on.
Q: How long will I be in therapy?
A: That depends on you. Some people come for a short while to work through something specific. Others stay longer to keep learning about themselves. We’ll talk about what feels right for you.
FAQs for
Parents &
Caregivers
Q: How does therapy help my child?
A: Therapy gives your child a safe, neutral space to process their thoughts and feelings. It helps them build self-understanding, resilience, and confidence while also giving them tools to manage stress, anxiety, and relationships.
Q: Will I know what my child says in therapy?
A: I keep sessions confidential so your child feels safe to open up. I won’t share the details of what they say unless there’s a safety concern or they have given me explicit permission. What I will do is keep you informed about overall themes, progress, and ways you can support them at home.
Q: What if I feel like the problems are partly about me?
A: Parenting is hard, and it often stirs up our own fears and old wounds. Therapy can support you, too. I offer sessions for parents to process their own experience so you can show up with clarity and steadiness for your child.
Q: How often will my child need therapy?
A: We start with weekly sessions to build momentum and trust. As progress continues, sessions may become less frequent. We’ll adjust the schedule based on your child’s needs.
Q: How do I choose the right therapist for my child?
A: The most important factor is fit. Your child needs to feel safe and comfortable with their therapist. That’s why I encourage starting with a consultation, so you and your child can see if this feels like the right connection. If I’m not the right fit, I am happy to make referrals.
Q: What role do I play while my child is in therapy?
A: You are central. Kids thrive when their parents or caregivers are engaged. Sometimes I’ll suggest ways you can support therapy goals at home, or we may do joint sessions. The goal is not just your child’s growth—it’s the strengthening of your whole family system.
